Abstract:

From a set of in-depth interviews, we gathered a significant ethnographic material on the concrete and symbolic paths taken by young women and their partners in search of a solution to unplanned pregnancy. Inequities in Brazilian society are expressed in itineraries/routes of different sinuosity, complexity and duration according to the individuals‘ social conditions of existence. Thus, for middle class youth the access to the abortion is very agile and secure, whereas for other women the decision to abort is made up of different efforts for achieving the project. The narratives may express dramatic contours, including abortion even in advanced stages of pregnancy.
