Abstract:

Evidence-informed decision making (EIDM) can optimize health services and systems. EIDM involves using evidence to define problems, finding tested interventions, assessing the quality of global and local evidence and translating evidence to key stakeholders considering current social values, and regulations. Brazil has been encouraging EIDM nationally and Piripiri, a municipality of 61,840 inhabitants located in the country poorest region, launched Brazil’s first evidence-to-action municipal center in 2010. We report the development and preliminary results of the ‘Piripiri Center for Evidence Use in Health Care’(NEv) and present its vision, members, mandate, and activities. The context under which NEv was developed including the involvement of the Evidence-Informed Policy Network-Brazil, Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information, and federal and municipal governments. We believe decentralization of financing and healthcare delivery, EIDM expansion, and policy entrepreneurs’ leadership explain NEv development. NEv has produced evidence briefs and deliberative dialogues with managers, providers, researchers, and users.. Monitoring and evaluation are underway and the results may lend themselves to scale up in Brazil and use abroad.
