Abstract:

Objectives: To estimate the risk of death according to sociodemographic characteristics, chronic diseases, frailty, functional capacity and social participation in the elderly and to verify, for the variables of health status and social participation, the median time of death. Methods: Retrospective longitudinal study with the elderly (≥ 65 years), carried out in 2008-09 and 2016-17 in Campinas/SP and Ermelino Matarazzo/SP. Face-to-face interviews were conducted in community centers and at home. The cumulative incidence of death was estimated and associations with the predictor variables were analyzed by Poisson multiple regression. The Kaplan-Meier method and the Log-rank test were used. Results: Of the 741 elderly people located in the follow-up, 192 died. There was a higher incidence of death in the elderly, in those who reported heart disease and in dependents to perform instrumental activities of daily living. There was a lower incidence of death in women, in the strata with the highest income and in those who performed three or more activities related to social inclusion. There were no differences in median survival times. Conclusion: The predictors of mortality can contribute to expand knowledge about the singularities of the aging process.
