Abstract:

To evaluate and correlate functional status (FS) and muscle strength (MS) in young-adults, adults, and elderly patients in an intensive care unit (ICU). A prospective cohort with 48 patients evaluated FS within the Functional Status Score for the Intensive Care Unit (FSS-ICU) and MS through the Medical Research Council Sum-Score (MRC-SS) and handgrip muscle strength (HMS) at awakening and ICU discharge. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis, Chi-square, Wilcoxon, and Spearman correlation tests. During awakening and discharge periods comparison, FS and MRC-SS were higher at discharge in all groups, with a lower increment in the aging group. HMS increased bilaterally at discharge, except in the adult group, which showed higher values on the awake period. During the group comparison, FSS-ICU was higher in adults on awakening and discharge, and the HMS-R (right side) was lower in the elderly group. Elderly patients had a lower increment in the FS and reduced MS in both periods. FS exhibited a strong association with the MS in young-adults and adult’s groups. Both FS and MS manifested a gradual increase during the ICU stay. The elderly has less gain in functional status, and have lower muscle strength since awakening. These associations were shown in young adults and adult’s groups, which restate the multifactorial factors associated with the disability and illness conditions in olde
