Abstract:

Abstract
This study aims to assess the media coverage about health in Portugal, in order to problematize issues in terms of health coverage and invisibility, which would result in the Media Coverage Neglected Themes. In spite of this, it was analyzed the coverage regarding health in the Portuguese Journal Publico compared along with the epidemiological context about health priorities and the key-actors’ perceptions about the media coverage diffusion and the relevant themes pertinent to the Portuguese population. Thus, such results shows that the recurrent themes associated to health does not relate to the diseases itself, but to the Politics and Economics of health and medicines. It was identified as Media Coverage Neglected Themes, in the Portuguese context, the communicable diseases, as hepatitis and tuberculosis; issues related to Mental Health and suicide; infirmities and consequences associated to the economic and social crisis that hit the country and, from the perceptions of the interviewed communicators, the Neglected Diseases, as the Hemochromatosis and rare diseases. At the same time, the study points out the Media Coverage Evidenced Themes as the misfortune related to the celebrities, explored exhaustively by the communication media in the country.
