Abstract:

The aim of this article is to discuss the medicalization of male sexuality considering two distinct historical processes. The first one refers to the great movement for intervention on male sexuality occurred in the early twentieth century in Brazil around the syphilis and the broader fight against venereal diseases. The second concerns the medicalization of sexuality through a focus on erectile dysfunction and the so called andropause and the creation of a new and inescapable pharmacology of sex in the transition to the twenty-first century. This contrast allows us to see some important differences. The study highlights the new emphasis on the notion of sexual health based on individual improvement and use of medications. It also demonstrates that the promotion of male interest in sex performance serves as a gateway to reach the treatment of male health.
