“The value of innovation: creating the future of the health system” of Casimiro Cavaco Dias analyses innovation as the way health system can be transformed to respond to the new health challenges. This theme is particularly relevant in the current economic and financial crisis in Europe and Brazil.A comprehensive understanding of the real value of innovation in health, as presented along the book, requires the engagement of other sectors of the society, highlighting the central role of the person and the local communities as co-producers of innovation and health. The value of innovation goes beyond the organizational performance of hospitals and other health services, reflecting also its health, social and economic dimensions. Facing the current economic crisis, the health system should become itself as the engine for stronger social cohesion, higher competitiveness and for relaunching the economy.
