Abstract:

The aim of this study wasto verify the prevalence changes of overweight in adolescents, and its association with socio-demographic variables and food insecurity over 5 years. Two cross-sectional population-based studies were conducted with 511 (2005) and 314 (2010).Overweight was evaluated based on sex and age specific cutoff points of BMI (weight/height2). The prevalence of food insecurity was investigated through the Brazilian Scale of Food Insecurity (EBIA). The associations between the variables were investigated based on the chi-square test. Logistic regression was used to verify the association between temporal changes of excess of weight according to sex, age, skin color, and food insecurity.Regarding overweight evolution it can be noted that in boys there was a significant increase for younger (20.1% to 49.5%), black or brown (22.2% to 37.3%), those with per capita income of up to ½ minimum wage (13.6% to 32.5%) and those with moderate and severe food insecurity (9.2% to 36.3%) between 2005 and 2010.It is concluded that the increase of overweight was significant in adolescents living in an area offood insecurity, and younger, black or brown, lower income adolescents, and those living with moderate and severe food insecurity are more exposed to this increase.
