Abstract:

The objective of the study was to investigate the magnitude, causes and time trend of child mortality among 5 to 14 years old, in the state of Rio de Janeiro (RJ),2000 to 2019. We performed an ecological time-series study, using datathe Information System on Mortality (SIM). Mortality rates per 100,000 children were calculated, by chapters, groups, and categories (ICD-10). The time series was estimated by Joinpoint regression. Mortality rates10 to 14 years were higher than those5 to 9 years. The 5 main causes of death were the same in both age groups, but in different order of importance. The two main ones were external causes and neoplasms (31% and 15% for 5 to 9 years; 45% and 11% for 10 to 14 years). Among children 5 to 9 years, the mortality trend had an annual decline (8.5%) between 2011 and 2015. From 10 to 14 years, the annual decline was 1.3%,2000 to 2019. Mortalityexternal causes decreased in both ranges, except for the category “Assault by unspecified firearm” (boys, 10-14 years old) and “Unspecified drowning and submersion” (boys, 5-9 years old). Mortalitycancer was stable for all. Infectious and respiratory diseases decreased differently between groups. Most causes of death are preventable or treatable, indicating the need for health and intersectoral investments.
