Abstract:

This article analyses different sides of depression and its association to elderly suicide based in psychological autopsies. It was used a retrospective method to study undetermined deaths, based on interviews and reports, which analyzes psychosocial circumstances related to suicide. The paper shows the predominance of gender, social class and race – women, middle and higher class, whites – and it contextualizes in an unusual way the depression in a population with high risk of suicide, poorly studied in Brazil and in the world. The level of physical and mental health, the social circumstances and the major biographic characteristics of the suicide victim was reconstructed in order to comprehend the impact of depression in the occurrence of suicide. Depression was presented in almost all cases as primary and secondary diagnosis, as symptoms associated to other co-morbidities or as reaction to social stressors, demanding different approaches and therapeutic procedures. The association between depression and multiple co-morbidities is worst to the case prognostic and it cumulatively increases the risk for suicide. Depression followed by suicide ideations is a risk factor which justifies immediately and preventive actions. It is recommended procedures to enlarge assertive diagnostic and treatment of depression in old age.
