Abstract:

The breastfeeding plays a fundamental role in the health benefits of newborn and nursing mother. The use of drugs during breastfeeding is a relevant topic, seen the frequent need for pharmacological treatment in the postpartum period. This article aimed to conduct literature review about the efficacy and safety of drugs used during the period of breastfeeding. Were consulted the databases PubMed (National Library of Medicine), Science Direct and Virtual Health Library (VHL), in Portuguese, English and Spanish, in articles published in the period 1981-2016. This review discusses the risk of the use of medicines in lactation and the effects that these may cause in the breastfed infant. Few drugs are contraindicated and others require care due the risk of adverse effects in breastfed infants or in suppressing breast milk volume. Therefore, the dissemination of updated informations for the health professional to assess adequately the risks and the benefits of the use of drugs during breastfeeding is of vital importance, and this way helps to avoid early weaning.
