Abstract:

The spine chronic diseases, including deformities and muscle pain, are important causes of morbidity among adults and the elderly. The aim of the present study is to measure the life expectancy with spine chronic diseases to Brazilians, by sex and age, in 2003 and 2008. The Sullivan method was used, which combined the period life-table with the period mortality and the prevalence of spine chronic diseases. The mortality information were obtained from the life tables published by the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística. The prevalence of spine chronic diseases of the Household Sample Survey (PNAD) came from the Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra Domiciliar (PNAD). The main results indicate that, in Brazil, born in 2008, a man could expect to live 69.1 years, 15% of those with spine chronic diseases. The women, who were born in the year, had a life expectancy of 76.7 years and expect to live 20% of those with spine chronic diseases. Over this period, concurrently with gains in life expectancy, there was an increase in healthy life expectancy, or length of life lived without spine chronic diseases, both in absolute and relative terms.
