Abstract:

Aim: to determine theassociationbetweenstressfulevents, spirituality, programparticipation and alcohol consumption in participants of the AA 12-step program. Method: descriptivecorrelation and predictive. Thepopulationweremembers of AA, Mexico. A simple randomsamplingbyclusterswasperformed, thesampleconsisted of 72 AA participantswith a confidencelevel of 95%. Weusedthe Spiritual PerspectiveScale and the Social Readjustment Rating Scale. Results: stressfulevents are negatively and significantlyrelated to alcohol consumption (rs = -.316, p = .007), thisindicatesthatthehigherthenumber of stressors, theloweristhenumber of dayswithout alcohol consumption, theparticipation in theprogramwaspositively and significantlyrelated to alcohol consumption (rs= .776, p = .001), thisindicatesthatgreateryears of participationisgreaternumber of dayswithout alcohol consumption, spiritualityshowed no significantrelationship (p > .05), thereisalso a significanteffect of participation in theprogram and ageon alcohol consumption(R2 = 65.2%, p = .001). Conclusions: participation in the AA programisrelated to and has aneffectonthenumber of dayswithout alcohol consumption.
