Abstract:

Objective
The present study identified overweight prevalence and food consumption among adolescents attending public schools of northern Minas Gerais.
Methods
This was a cross-sectional with a representative of adolescents from public schools in a city of northern Minas Gerais state. Data on demographic and economic data were collected. The food consumption was evaluated by applying a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. Body weight and height were measured to assess the nutritional status based on Body Mass Index (BMI) for Age. The sexes were compared by Student‘s t test (for means) and chi-square test (for proportions) with at a level of significance of p <0.05.
Results
A number of 535 adolescents were evaluated and overweight prevalence was detected in 18.5% of the group. BMI and overweight were statistically different between the sexes and higher for girls. The average energy consumption of the group was 3096.30 kcal/day. Fibers consumption was insufficient for 35% of the adolescents, vitamin A and calcium for 85% and unsaturated fats for 100%. Carbohydrate and cholesterol were consumed in excess by 20.6% and 48%, respectively.
Conclusion
The prevalence of overweight and inadequate food consumption is worrying for the population studied and requires adequate nutritional intervention.
