Abstract:

Conduct a systematic review of papers to identify demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral and anthropometric factors associated with hypertension. This article included observational studies of populations aged 18 years or more in the last ten years, published in English, Portuguese or Spanish, Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus and Lilacs databases. At the end, 42 articles were included, most of them of the sectional type. The main factors associated with hypertension found in the studies were older age and high Body Mass Index (BMI). The study also found other factors such as, gender (male), schooling (lower schooling), income (lower income) and waist circumference (high). On the other hand, never having smoked, never having consumed alcohol and having white color are associated with lower chance of having hypertension. Therefore, demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral and anthropometric characteristics are associated with greater chance of having hypertension in the adult population. However, while most factors associeated with hypertension are amenable to intervention, broader health promotion policies will be needed to reduce socioeconomic inequalities in the prevalence of hypertension.
