Abstract:

OBJECTIVES: To assess the nutritional status of users of public restaurants and canteens in Belo Horizonte and identify factors associated with overweight.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional analytical study conducted among adults of both sexes, at public restaurants and canteens in Belo Horizonte. Overweight was the dependent variable and was defined as body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2. This was correlated with sociodemographic variables and the level of physical activity. The data were obtained directly, through weight and height measurement, anda semi-structured questionnaire.
RESULTS: 1334 individuals participated in this study, the majority being male.. The prevalence of overweight was 42.9% among the men and 45.8% among the women. The following factors were positively associated with overweight: to be older for both sexes; having a partner, for the women; and lower physical activity practice and higher socioeconomic, for the men.
CONCLUSION: Detection of factors associated with overweight reveals that there is a need to implement an effective systematic program of dietary and nutritional education in order to prevent and remedy this condition, so that public restaurants fulfill their objective of promoting food and nutritional security among workers in major urban centers who are in situations of social and nutritional vulnerability.
