Objective. To identify the women gender role as workers, through health services providers perception from “Casas de Salud de las Mujeres Indígenas” in Ometepec, Guerrero and Matías Romero, Oaxaca, Mexico. Methodology. Qualitative study, based on a secondary analysis of the interviews carried out as a part of the project “Rescatando la experiencia de la Casa de la Mujer Indígena: sistematización y evaluación del proceso”. Results. An important work valuation and a strong commitment towards the community were identified. Guilt appears like a product of tension between the work outside the home and the responsibilities like mothers and wives. The possibility of helping other women let them live with these conflicts; prestige and recognition are added to the role benefits. Conclusions. The labor experience of the women workers in the “Casas de Salud de las Mujeres Indígenas” of Matías Romero, Oaxaca and Ometepec, Guerrero, described in this paper, shows it has very specific characteristics which are difficult to repeat in other regions of the country.
