Abstract:

Introduction: Considering the direct relationship between income indicators and food security situation, the greater vulnerability of women and the families headed by them can be understood. In Brazil, the social program Programa Nacional Mulheres Mil aims to intensify the process of regional and institutional development by improving the access of women in situation of social vulnerability to education and work. Objective: to analyze how the Programa Nacional Mulheres Mil’s proposal can contribute to a change regarding the greater vulnerability to food insecurity of households whose responsibility relies on a woman. Method: a semi-structured questionnaire was applied to 384 participants, which contained the demographic and socioeconomic variables as well as the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale. Results: it was observed that, although there was no change in the Food Security situation, there were significant differences in relation to income, especially among women in situation of food insecurity, varying20.5% to 46% the number of participants with an income range higher than one minimum wage. Conclusion: An advance in income was identified, but not enough to intervene in Food Insecurity.
