EpidemiologiaAbstract:
This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of the combination of Body Mass Index (BMI) plus Waist Circumference (WC) and of BMI plus Waist to Height Ratio (WHR)] and to investigate factors associated with these outcomes. Participants in a two-stage random sample of adults (>20 years), living in communities reminiscent of African slaves in Brazil (Quilombo), Vitória da Conquista-Bain 2011. Combined nutritional risk BMI+WHR defined by simultaneous presence of BMI>25,0Kg/m2 or >27,0Kg/m2, if age >60 years and WHR>0,5. Nutritional risk BMI+WC defined by elevated BMI in addition to WC>80cm, if women, or >94cm, if men. Among 739 participants, the prevalence of combined nutritional indicators were 35,3% (BMI+WHR) and 26,8% (BMI+WC). Female sex and hypertension increased the chances of both combination of indicators, while being unmarried decreased the chances. Prevalence of BMI+WHR was higher among 40-59 years-old and prevalence of BMI+WC was greater among 40-49 years-old. Low education increased the chance of the combined indicator BMI + WHR and watch television for more than two hours/day, the indicator BMI + WC. The high prevalence of combined nutritional indicators indicate the need of health promotion actions directed to prevent obesity.Key-words:
