Abstract:

This study aimed to evaluate the association between having had an induced abortion and marital status (single or legally married) in women residing in the city of São Paulo. The present analysis is derived from a larger populational survey about abortion conducted in 2008. Here we focus on the the subset of 389 single and legally married wome, aged 15 to 49 years old. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between induced abortion and to be single or married, controlling for age, education, income, number of live births, contraceptive use and acceptance of abortion practice. To be single was the only characteristic associated with having had an induced abortion, that is, single women were four times more likely to have had an abortion than married women when facing a pregnancy (OR=3.9; p=0.009).
