Abstract:

The Ministry of Health proposes a minimum calendar of consultations in child care to
monitor growth and development. The objective was to analyze the adequacy of the
minimum consultation calendar for children under 5 years old with at least 1
anthropometric follow-up registered at the Food and Nutritional Surveillance System
(SISVAN – Portuguese acronym)2008 to 2020. The sample size was 23,453,620
children under 5 years old, and 103,773,311 records. The indicators analyzed were the
median number of consultations and the adequacy of the last consultation to the
calendar. In Brazil, the median of consultations was equal to 3, lower than
recommended. For children born after 2008, the adequacy of the last consultation to the
calendar was 11.8% with inequalities, lower in the North region (5.7%) and higher in
the South region (22.5%). Comparing federative units, Amapá and Roraima showed the
lowest frequencies, and Paraíba and Paraná had the highest frequencies. The adequacy
of the last consultation to the calendar showed higher frequencies among municipalities
in the fifth-highest GDP per capita. SISVAN presents inequalities in access to health
services; the greatest adequacy to the minimum consultation calendar is in the South
and Southeast regions.
