Abstract:

The demand for long-term care institution for the elderly (ILPIs) is increasing and discuss the process of assessing the health status of its residents it is relevant for public health systems. The study aimed to identify measurement tools built specifically for the management and care of elderly residents in long time care facilities. Was conducted a systematic review under the PRISMA recommendations in databases MEDLINE and CINAHL from its inception until May 2013 using the Medical Subject Headings terms suitable for the search. Were founded 1858 and selected 30 articles, identified 28 instruments in these studies. The United States was the country that built most instruments at this population and the Minimum Data Set / Resident Assessment Instrument (MDS / RAI) was the most used in studies of this review. The most variables often evaluated by the instruments were depression, cognition and functional capacity. It is urgent the reformulation of public policies that ensure a standardized assessment system to ILPIs residents in Brazil and a challenge to the developed instruments are able to spread and be effective in the professionals of these institutions daily.
