Abstract:

The aim of this study was to determine the circumstances of aggressions and the patterns of maxillofacial trauma among victims of interpersonal violence. A cross-sectional and exploratory study was carried out based on the analysis of 7.132 medical-legal and social records of victims treated at a Center of Legal Medicine and Forensic Dentistry. Descriptive and multivariate statistics using Multiple Correspondence Analysis were performed. Three clusters with distinct profiles of victimization were identified. The first cluster consisted of men in different age groups, who were victims of community violence, resulting in facial bone fractures or dentoalveolar fractures. The second cluster was characterized by male and female adolescents (10-19 years), victims of interpersonal violence, who did not exhibit a specific type of trauma. The third cluster consisted of women, adults (≥ 20 years), who were victims of domestic violence, resulting in soft tissue lesions on the face or other body regions. The results suggest that sociodemographic and circumstantial characteristics are important factors in victimization resulting in maxillofacial trauma and interpersonal violence.
