A cross-sectional quantitative study was carried out with 241 elderly people diagnosed with HIV, assisted in the reference services of Recife city in Pernambuco, Brazil. Knowledge and attitudes were evaluated through the Aging Sexual Knowledge and Attitudes Scale (ASKAS). The results show that elderly men, people with higher educational level, those without depressive symptoms and individuals diagnosed with HIV for more than 12 years have greater level of knowledge about sexuality in the elderly. Conservative attitudes toward sexuality in aging have been strongly associated with women, illiterate participants, practicing evangelical and catholic religion, and the elderly people diagnosed with HIV with less than 12 years. The elderly people with less knowledge presented more conservative attitudes regarding sexuality in aging (r = 0.42, p<0.0001). Thus, it is essential to carry out health actions with the aim of improving knowledge and attitudes regarding sexuality in the elderly, paying particular attention to those who are most vulnerable to HIV infection.
Conhecimento e atitudes sobre sexualidade em pessoas idosas com HIV.
Abstract(resumo):
Trata-se de um estudo quantitativo, de corte transversal, realizado com 241 idosos diagnosticados com HIV, assistidos nos serviços de referência do município de Recife/PE. O conhecimento e atitudes foram avaliados por meio da Escala de atitudes e conhecimento sobre sexualidade no envelhecimento (ASKAS). Os homens idosos, participantes com maior grau de escolaridade, aqueles sem sintomatologia depressiva e os indivíduos com diagnóstico do HIV há mais de 12 anos apresentaram maior conhecimento acerca da sexualidade na terceira idade. As atitudes conservadoras em relação à sexualidade no envelhecimento se mostraram fortemente associadas ao sexo feminino, aos participantes analfabetos, praticantes de religião evangélica e católica e aos idosos com menos de 12 anos de diagnóstico do HIV. Os idosos com menos conhecimento apresentaram atitudes mais conservadoras em relação à sexualidade no envelhecimento (r= 0,42; p<0,0001). Dessa forma, é importante realizar ações em saúde com o intuito de melhorar o conhecimento e as atitudes em relação à sexualidade na terceira idade, dando especial atenção aos idosos mais vulneráveis à infecção pelo HIV.
