Abstract:

Objective: to analyze medication exposures in women in reproductive age, notified by the Toxicology Information Center. Methods: a study was conducted to characterize the acute medication exposures in women in reproductive age, reported from 2007 to 2011. The characteristics related to the patient, the expousure and the medicine resulting in 777 cases. Data was collected from System of National Injuries Notification forms and processed on Epi Info software for Windows. Results: A large number of occurrences (90,5%) was intentional, 33,7% of theses incidents involved the intake of 2 or 3 types of drugs by the patients and the occurence of hospitalization was 35,6%. Central nervous system drugs were responsible for 59,9% of the accidents. Among this kind of drugs, antidepressants (21,3%) and antiepileptics (21,2%) were most commonly involved. The mainly factors associated to the hospitalization was: delayed medical rescue after the expousure, graduated patients, incidents involving 2 or 3 types of drugs and expousures to antiepileptics and antidepressants.
Conclusion: Data from this study showed that medicine-related exposure is a serious health problem to women in reproductive age, and it contributes to increase the number of hospitalizations.
