Abstract:

Objective: Analyze the temporal trends of mortality in road traffic accidents (ATT) as well as identify the existence and location of clusters of high risk of deaths by ATT using spatial analysis. Methodology: Descriptive study of temporal trends by ATT, pedestrian, occupant of motorcycle and vehicle, from 2000 to 2010 and spatial analysis for 2000 and 2010. The data was obtained through the System of Mortality Information, calculated standardizes rates by age in Units of the Federation (UF) and municipalities grouped by population size. Results: The mortality rates by ATT between 2000 and 2010 varied from 18 to 22,5 deaths/100 thousand inhabitants. The risk of death for pedestrians was reduced in the last years; occupants of vehicles and motorcycles present a growing trend. A higher risk of death by ATT occurred in municipalities with population up to 20 thousand inhabitants and in those from 20 to 100 thousand inhabitants. Spatial analysis revealed clusters of risk for ATT and occupants of motorcycles with an increase between 2000 and 2010 and enlargement of the areas most of risk in the Northeast. Conclusion: Increase in the rates of mortality by ATT mostly in the Northeast. A coordinated action between government, civil society and by the own citizens are necessary to face this reality.
