Abstract:

The strong interest in narrative studies showed by the sociology and anthropology of health led to many ways of incorporation of these studies in qualitative health research. It is important to reflect on contexts and features of this incorporation. To accomplish this reflection, we indicate some main theoretical issues involved here, as well as situate this incorporation in the broader context of sociology and anthropology of health. The contribution of narrative studies to reflection about important issues in social sciences is also discussed, as well as the relationships between structure and social action, and between specific social interaction contexts and broader societal contexts. This contribution can be identified in narrative analysis made in order to understand the relationships established between interpretation, experience and action through the health-disease-care process. It is argued that narratives not only organize interpretations, but can also be considered a specific type of social agency. In this sense, the narrative interpretations and narrative performances can be saw as core elements in the construction of specific experiences and trajectories of illness and care.
