Abstract:

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis affects 2% to 4% of young people in Brazil. Repeated exposures to the radiological examinations, in the monitoring of this deformity, can be harmful to the health. The objective of this study is to present a photogrammetry protocol, as a non-ionizing method, to quantify scoliosis, and to relate it to the Cobb radiological method. Sixteen individuals with idiopathic scoliosis (21.4 ± 6.1 years of age and 19.8 ± 0.2 of body mass index) were submitted to X-rays, standing, posteroanterior of the trunk, and, posteriorly, photograph of the posterior trunk after receiving anatomical landmarkers in the spinal processes of the vertebrae C7 to L5. The images were sent for independent analysis of two trained examiners in the quantification of scoliosis for the type of image received. The average of the thoracic curvature evaluated through the Cobb and photogrammetry methods were 36.14° and 36.43°, respectively. The average difference between both methods was 4,1°. There was no statistically significant difference (p-value < 5%) between them. Photogrammetry, as a non-ionizing method, low cost and portable, may represent an alternative to the radiological method. Further studies are needed in the improvement of non-ionizing techniques in EIA screening.
