Abstract:

This study evaluated the oral hygiene habits among quilombola and non quilombola rural adolescentsthe countryside of Bahia and their associated factors. It was a home-based cross-sectional study, conducted in 2015, with a structured questionnaire. Prevalences and prevalence ratios were estimated for the outcomes and multiple Poisson regression analysis with robust variance was conducted. We recruited 390 adolescents for the study, 42.8% quilombolas. Unsatisfactory dental brushing and non-use of dental floss were found in 33.3% and 46.7% of adolescents, respectively. Unsatisfactory dental brushing was increased by: male sex, not living with both parents, less hand washing and worse self-assessment of oral health. Non-use of dental floss was associated with: economic level E, older age and worse self-assessment of oral health. Although there were no differences between oral health habits between quilombolas and non quilombolas, the associated factors were different. These findings show the need to consider the specificities of the populations for the promotion of adolescents\' oral health. The importance of the intersectoral relationship between education and health is emphasized, but also the need to involve families in this process.
