Abstract:

The aim of this study was to describe leisure-time physical activity (LPA) practice during the COVID-19 pandemic in the south of Brazil according to sex, level of education and adherence to social distancing. Population-based and cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in the city of Bagé. LPA practice during the pandemic, place of practice and supervision of Physical Education professional were assessed. The sample included 377 adults and 24.4% reported LPA practice during the pandemic. Marked inequalities were observed; LPA practice prevalence among men was 20 percentage points (pp) higher than women prevalence, and 40 pp higher among those with higher education level compared to the group with lower education level. Among those reporting LPA practice, 53.5% practiced at home and 64.8% did not report professional supervision. Differences between LPA and level of social distancing were not observed. Beyond the reproduction of simple approaches considering that people should include physical activity practice in the pandemic context, this study addressed social and cultural aspects not always considered in the area. We emphasized, based on the marked inequalities observed, that LPA promotion initiatives must present humanized approaches considering the unequal conditions of life in Brazil.
