Abstract:

Aiming to analyze the perceptions of Police officers about their professional identity as well as about the institution they belong and their opinion concerning the image the society has on their performance, the data presented springs from a survey focused on their working and health conditions. Thus, it includes a questionnaire, interviews and focusing groups formed with managers, sheriffs and officers. It was then determined the relative frequencies and average return for answers about working conditions, professional fulfillment and life quality improvement after joining the institution. Qualitative questions were asked, directing the officers’ opinion about society awareness when it comes to the Civil Police and the meaning of being a Police Officer in the area of the study. The analysis followed the method of Interpretation. The results point to a negative image that the Police Officers believe society holds about them, which implies devaluation and strengthening the profession. Refusing this negative identity, they try to distinguish the differences between a Civil Police from that of a Military Police Officers. It is concluded that an action is required so that their working conditions may improve, as well as increasing the dialogue channels with community. Health care improvement should also be observed.
