Abstract:

The objective of this study was to verify the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medication use (PIM) for older people living in nursing homes (NH), as well as the medications types and its associated factors. This cross-sectional study was carried out in 10 NH in the city of Natal between October and December 2013. Inappropriate medications were classified according to the 2015 American Geriatric Society Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults - 2015. Sociodemographic, NH-related and health-related variables were considered. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed between the main variable (PIM) and the independent variables using Poisson regression. The sample consisted of 321 older people, of whom 304 used medications. The prevalence of PIM was 54.6% (CI95%: 48.9-60.2) and it was associated with polypharmacy, according to the final model. The most common PIM were antipsychotics and benzodiazepines. The study revealed a high prevalence of PIM among the elderly of the NH, configuring the need to adopt indicators of the use of these drugs and the implementation of strategies that make pharmacotherapy safer and more adequate for older people.
