Abstract:

The aim of this study was investigate the prejudices against women among workers in primary health care and to identify associated factors in a cross-sectional study with a sample of 163 professionals of primary care services. The questionnaires Gender Stereotypes and the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory were used. The sample consisted of people of both genders, over 18 years old and basic education or high school. The scores had average values above 50.0%: Gender stereotypes - 53.8%, Hostile Sexism - Sexism and Benevolent 58.2% - 64.1%. These averages, after stratification, are also high. Statistic significant differences were found by gender (male bigger than female), religions (bigger in the evangelicals) and among those who used alcohol in the case of Hostile Sexism. For it Benevolent attribute there were differences in education (bigger at the basic level), religion (bigger in Evangelicals and Catholics) and for work performed (bigger in general services). Significant differences were not found in Gender stereotypes. Sexist prejudices hostile and benevolent as well as gender stereotypes were identified in professionals working in primary health care. This may cause negatively impact service-users regarding aggravating the health inequalities generated by gender inequalities.
