Abstract:

The aim of this study was to evaluate the adequacy of prenatal care in Brazil associated with socio-demographic determinants. We analyzed datathe Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde done in Brazil in 2013. Two outcomes on the adequacy of prenatal care were evaluated, the Kessner index modified by Takeda, and another that, in addition to that index, evaluated whether measurement of blood pressure and weight was performed on all queries, blood and urine test, and any ultrasound during pregnancy. Both quality indicators were assessed for Brazil and by geographical regions of the country. According to the Outcome 1, 80.6% of women had adequate prenatal care. By adding the exams (Outcome 2) the rate fell to 71.4%. Adequate prenatal care was more frequent among women white and who conducted the prenatal in the private sector. The northern region had the lowest frequency of adequate prenatal care, while the southeast region had the highest frequencies. Despite the wide coverage, prenatal care in Brazil still has inequities and low quality care, especially among womenthe poorest regions of the country.
