Abstract:

This cross-sectional study investigated the prevalence and factors associated to advanced stage at diagnosis of breast cancer among 18,890 women assisted in a specialized hospital in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between the years 1999 and 2016. For this purpose, we used Poisson regression with robust variance to estimate prevalence ratios and respective 95% confidence intervals. The overall prevalence of the advanced stage at diagnosis of breast cancer was 43.67%. The highest prevalence of diagnosis in this condition was women aged between 20-39 and 40-49 years, among black and brown women, living without a partner, comingother cities of the state of Rio de Janeiro, who had the Unified Health System as the origin of the referral and were diagnosed in the 1999-2004 and 2005-2010 six-year periods. On the other hand, women aged 60-69 and 70-99 years, which presented some level of education, with a family history of cancer and who arrived at the hospital with diagnosis and without treatment had lower prevalence of the advanced stage at diagnosis of breast cancer. These results can be considered when planning secondary prevention actions in order to anticipate the diagnosis of breast cancer in the most vulnerable groups and, thus, collaborate to reduce the prevalence of the advanced stage at diagnosis of breast cancer.
