Abstract:

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), their association with gender, parafunctional habits, emotional stress, anxiety and depression and their impact on quality of life related to oral health (OHRQL) in pre-entrance examination students public and private institutions of João Pessoa / PB. The sample was composed of 303 students. The presence of symptoms of TMD was determined through history questionnaire also contains questions related to the presence of parafunctional habits and emotional tension. A simplified protocol of clinical evaluation was applied. Anxiety and depression were determined by the scale Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) and the OHRQL assessed using the short version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). Chi-square tests were performed, Fisher exact test, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis. The signs and symptoms of DTM was statistically associated (p = 0.05) to the female gender, parafunctional habits, emotional stress and anxiety, and represented greater OHRQL impairment. The physical pain was the most affected domain. The elevated prevalence of signs and symptoms of TMD for pre-entrance examination students indicates the importance of the disclosure and clarification of teachers and students for the early detection and prevention of the problem.
