Abstract:

The main aim of this study was to problematize aspects of work of professors in relation to gender, assessment policies and health. To this end, a qualitative social research was conducted under a strand of participatory studies and materialistic feminism. As for the research procedures, it adopted two investigation techniques, workers\' health workshops and health and work booklets. An analysis of the material was carried out through content analysis, in the thematic mode, using four main themes: conflicts between professors’ work and domestic work; professors’ work, motherhood and guilt; policies for assessment of professors’work and gender relations; sexual division of labor and teaching. It was realized how much the demands of the productive sphere have gone beyond the time of the workday to the reproductive sphere and the private life of professors, compromising the struggle and the defense for health that can reach to suffering and illness processes. The theme of the sexual division of labor in public universities appears as an important issue that highlights work overload and psychic malaise, especially at a time when teaching work is becoming increasingly competitive. It concludes that there is an imperative need for investments in public policies that guarantee the gender equality in higher teaching work.
