This study objectived to indentify type and time period of breast feeding received by children, and verifying the association with non-nutritives suction habits. It was a transversal study, retrospective, which was applied a questionnarie in 330 mothers or 3-6 years old children's responsables registered in Araçatuba/SP schools, after free and clarified assent. Noticed that 86.4% from mothers feeded your children. About time period, only 33.4% from these mothers feeded exclusively in breast after 6 months in life. The average time of exclusive breast feeding received by children was 3.84 months and complementary breast feeding was 11.68 months. In total, 53.3% told their children showed non-nutritives suction habits and from those children, 70.45% were not feeded exclusively in breast during 6 months in life, existing significant association between both (p<0.05). The pacifier using was the most frequent habit (44.4%), showing statisticly significant association with type and breastfeeding time (p<0.0001). Concludes breast feeding was practiced however in a inferior time period related to the period considerated indispensable to the baby's growing, existing association between time and type of breast feeding and non-nutritives suction habits.Key words: Breast feeding, Maternal breast feeding, non-nutritives suction habits.
