ABSTRACT


An empirical investigation discussed the ideas of the Brazilian Codex Alimentarius Committee (CCAB) coordinated by Inmetro, in regard to the Codex Alimentarius norm Working Principles for Risk Analysis (RA), as applied to Food Safety. The objectives of this investigation were: to identify and analyze the opinion of CCAB members on RA and to register their proposals for the application of this norm in Brazil highlighting the local limitations and possibilities detected.
Results: CCAB members favored the Codex Alimentarius initiative of instituting an RA norm to promote the health safety of foods that circulate on the international market. There was consensus that the Brazilian government must incorporate RA as an official policy to improve the country's system of food control and fortify Brazilian food exports. They recognize that Brazil has the technical-scientific capacity to apply this norm but they have identified several political-institutional limitations.
Conclusion: Members recognized RA as an important initiative in facing food risk due to its ability to improve food safety control measures adopted by government.
