Abstract:

This article discusses the role of the populations affected by situations of environmental injustice in producing knowledge about environmental health. Such situations arise from inequalities and discriminations in the distribution of risks and benefits of economic development. Our perspective assumes the relevance of local, situated and popular knowledge from populations in their daily life facing environmental risks present in their territories. With this aim, we present an expanded vision of health and discuss the limits of classical or normal science to recognize the importance of local knowledge from affected communities in analyzing environmental risks and their impacts on health, including epidemiological studies of a quantitative nature. These limits are linked primarily to the concealment of conflicts and uncertainties, the lack of contextualization of risk exposure and health effects, as well as the difficulties of dialogue with the communities. The article also presents contributions and advances due to movements for environmental justice, recognizing, however, the difficult path to be traveled in that direction. Nevertheless we believe that the constructivist, procedural and democratic perspectives with the confrontation of theories and practices will guide the scientific production in supporting environmental justice.
