Abstract:

The aim of this study was to evaluate the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and relate to socioeconomic, hygienic, sanitary and health conditions in the elderly of the Family Health Strategy (FHS) in the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The research was a cross-sectional study in which a questionnaire with epidemiologic questions was applied and performed blood collection. The assessment of IgG and IgM anti-T. gondii was performed by ELISA. It was evaluated 599 elderly individuals seroprevalence for IgG anti-T. gondii 88.0% and 0.8% for IgM. In multivariate analysis, the independently variables associated to IgG positive: age, personal income and wears glasses, to IgM positive: age, self-rated health and wears glasses. The results call attention to the high prevalence of IgG anti-T. gondii in elderly of FHS in Porto Alegre, generating a concern in the case of reactivation of toxoplasmosis and development of more severe symptoms of this infection occur.
