The article analyzes in Wolf Lepenies’ perspective the sociology of medicine three dimensions - historical, social and cognitive in the construction of their identity. It is understood that the construction of an identity does not end with the first historical manifestations, but when it was consolidated and institutionalized progressively structured as a field of knowledge by creating their own forms of cognitive expression. The text is divided into three parts: first, the precursors are presented, highlighting the role played by some travelers, naturalists and scholars of folklore, followed by "medical-social scientists" and the first social scientists (1940-1969), in second, aspects of the consolidation of the social sciences in health - two moments: the 70s and the 80s, in the third part, in general, are addressed the issues raised by the field. It is considered that completed the main stages of his disciplining project there is still need for the formation of new generations of social scientists in health to improve means of formal education, to develop the dissemination of scientific and deepen and institutionalize relations on one side with the sociological matrices and with de field of health.
