Abstract:

The biomass burning exerts a relevant impact on the Amazon ecosystem in the dry season, with the emissions of air pollutants. The effects on the health of populations, especially in the arc of deforestation of the region, has been the subject of recent studies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial distribution of biomass burning and mortality from respiratory and cardiovascular diseases in the elderly, at the state of Rondônia, in the period 2001-2012. Mortality data were obtained through the Mortality Information System of the Ministry of Health. Biomass burning data were provided by the National Institute for Space Research. We used the Kernel estimator. The highest mortality rates were observed in the central-east and southeast of Rondônia. Fire focus were concentrated in the northern part of the state, but with a significant amount in other regions. The spatial distribution of the hot areas of mortality and fires were not directly associated. However, fires focus were observed in all municipalities in the state. Pollutants emitted in biomass burning can be transported thousands of kilometers from the source areas and influence the health of the elderly.
