Abstract:

In Cuba, the knowledge about pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum is deficient in the context of present society. The childbirth has been fundamentally studied as a medical event from its clinical aspects. The analysis of reproductive process from the Medical Anthropology perspective could contribute to the attention services to achieve warmth in the treatment, freedom in the options for labour and women and men who are fully responsible for their reproductive process. The present study investigated the experience and perception of childbirth in three hospitals in Havana city. The purpose of this research was to understand, from the principles of medical anthropology, the representation and practice of the childbirth and to describe the women experiences during this event. Qualitative techniques were used: interviews and participant observation of 36 women in labor, ten relative and nine obstetricians. The qualitative data was analyzed by the Grounded theory. All the childbirth took place with several medical interventions. Maternal experience was very intense. The participation of men was limited in this process. From anthropological perspective the routine use of some medical interventions and institutional regulations described are considered as manifestation of gender and physical violence.
