Abstract:

This article deals with the vision of Palliative Care in the direction of a “good death” for adults and children. Based on the examination of textbooks, manuals and articles, as well as the observation of courses and congresses within the specialty, which focuses on patients diagnosed as “beyond therapeutic cure possibilities”, the differences between the care of adults and children are examined. Health teams seek to provide care for the “bio-psycho-social-spiritual totality” of the sick person and his family members, to offer “quality of life”, with the patient’s autonomy and control of his symptoms. According to the palliative model, the social actors involved in care must accept the end of life. It is a question of producing a “good death”, “with dignity”, one that is peaceful, which is not only accepted but also visible and shared socially, with support from a multi-professional team. This is a complex configuration, because various factors and circumstances may intervene, especially in the case of children, when a paradox presents itself, since terminal illness at this stage of life – so highly valued in contemporary Western culture – constitutes a social drama.
