Abstract:

Collective Oral Health (SBC) may designate a specific, distinct historical phenomenon of the others "dental alternatives" and a theoretical framework for the dental practices in health services. This study sought to understand the permanence of "dental alternatives" in the social space of struggle for oral health in Brazil, from positions of the founders and forerunners agents, taking into account the SBC concepts, Community Health (SC) and SUS. It started from the theory of Pierre Bourdieu practices, complemented by concepts of hegemony and counter-hegemony in Gramsci. There were 12 in-depth interviews, document review and analysis of the scientific production and the trajectories of the agents their capital in 1980 and 2013. The results indicate that the design of SBC and SC as a rupture with health practices originated the "dental alternatives" prevailed among those with political arrangements in defense of democracy and the Health Reform. While the SBC is constituted as critical proposal, remain old “Odontology” in scientific production and oral health practices.
