ABSTRACTThe study aims to analyze the process of detection and treatment of tuberculosis (TB) in a southern Brazilian prison. Was performed active and passive TB case finding, to estimate the TB magnitude in a prison with 764 inmates. Simultaneously the detection strategies and clinical follow-up of the 41 TB cases, participant observation and records in field diary were carried out, which allowed analyze strengths and limitations of detection and treatment of TB cases in prison. We discuss the development of search strategies, the use of questionnaires to detect symptomatic, the fragility of the clinical follow-up of TB cases, the involvement of different workers and coordination between prison and health services. There are potentialities for TB control using the active search to induce the passive detection and screening for symptoms that, even interfered by the perceptions of inmates on the symptoms of TB, increased the detection. The functional dynamics of prison hinders the inclusion of health routines, and can restrict TB control actions and other diseases. In TB control process in prisons, the feasibility of effective detection methods is as important as planning it from disease conditions, network services and workers involved.
