Abstract:

This study aims at identifying the profile of caregivers of pediatric patients diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). It was a transversal, descriptive and prospective study where fibrocystic patients’ caregivers were interviewed during pharmaceutical consultation in a reference center of a University Hospital in southern Brazil. We obtained general information about the caregivers and also about the disease understanding, drugs consumption and dynamics of treatment at home and at school. We interviewed 75 caregivers. Most of them were female, 37.3 years old on average, patients’ mother and homeworkers. Seventy one caregivers informed difficulty in drugs acquisition and supporting associations were highlighted as the main alternative to avoid treatment interruption. Other difficulties were also informed. The overload of caring process charges only one caregiver, reflecting in social and economic impacts and changes to family’s daily routine was another observed information. This fact emphasizes the need of intervention by a qualified multidiscipline team to identify and alleviate difficulties, investing in interpersonal relations and implementing the assistance.
