It is presented a review of the literature regarding the role of religion in the promotion of health, in the prevention of violence and in the rehabilitation of individuals involved in criminal activities. An article research was performed on the following database: Medline through PubMed, Lilacs, Scopus, Social Index With Full Text, Sociological Abstracts and Social Services Abstracts. Twenty-nine essays were selected and analyzed between 1990 and 2011 in Portuguese, English and Spanish. The main results indicate the function of the religious group and the role of religion in the rehabilitation of individuals, in the prevention of criminal involvement, in corrective orientations and in social iniquity environments. A debate is presented on the main disclosed themes, highlighting the multiplicity of religious roles, its influence over incarcerated individuals, as a support base and social control and its influence on mental health promotion and life quality. The relation between religion and public sphere is discussed, emphasizing the role of religious groups and that some of their activities exposes the fragility of the State in providing basic public policies. Regardless of pointing out a successful role of religion in violence prevention and in rehabilitation, some studies question this relation and highlights the conflicts between the employed concepts and the final results.

O Papel da Religião na Promoção da Saúde, na Prevenção da Violência e na Reabilitação de Pessoas Envolvidas com a Criminalidade: revisão de literatura
Abstract(resumo):
Apresenta-se uma revisão da literatura sobre o papel da religião na promoção da saúde, na prevenção da violência e na reabilitação e recuperação de pessoas envolvidas com a criminalidade. Foi realizada uma pesquisa de artigos nas bases Medline via PubMed, Lilacs, Scopus, Social Index With Full Text, Sociological Abstracts e Social Services Abstracts. Foram selecionados e analisados 29 estudos entre 1990 e 2011 nas línguas portuguesa, inglesa e espanhola. Os principais resultados apontam a função do grupo e o papel da religião na reabilitação de pessoas, na prevenção do envolvimento com a criminalidade, em orientações correcionais, e em territórios de iniquidade social. É realizado um debate acerca dos principais temas encontrados, destacando a multiplicidade de papéis da religião, sua atuação junto à pessoas encarceradas, como base de apoio e controle social e sua influência na promoção da saúde mental e da qualidade de vida. A relação entre religião e esfera pública é discutida, assinalando o papel de grupos religiosos e que algumas de suas iniciativas deixam exposta a fragilidade do Estado em fornecer políticas públicas básicas à população. Apesar de apontarem o papel exitoso da religião na prevenção da violência e na reabilitação de pessoas, alguns estudos põem em xeque esta relação e destacam conflitos entre os conceitos utilizados e entre os resultados obtidos.
