Abstract:

The study aims to describe trends of the BMI and analyze the association between the body mass index (BMI) and variables sociodemographic and of sufficiency and type of the food consumed in the Brazilian elderly of both sexes. The authors used data collected by the Household Budget Surveys (HBS) conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics in 2002/03 and 2008/09. The prevalences of overweight and obesity increased and normal and low weight decreased. Regression models were used for 2008/09 to analyze the association between BMI and variables sociodemographic and of family perception of the sufficiency and the type of food consumed. Income and age had more significant influence variables on the presented more associated with BMI. It is suggested preventive measures and monitoring health and nutrition through public policy, considering the multifactorial overweight in Brazilian elderly.
